INCIDENT23004211-1
EMERGENCY VEHICLE, WILFULLY OBSTRUCT C89 S7

MASSACHUSETTS AVE
CPD assisted with a scheduled protest that was taking place at Cambridge City Hall. It was estimated that there were approximately two hundred protesters. These protesters marched down Massachusetts Avenue on to Prospect Street and gathered on the corner of Bishop Allen and Prospect Street. During this time, these protesters were peaceful and only obstructing one block on Bishop Allen near Temple Street. Moments later, the protesters began marching down Prospect Street towards Massachusetts Avenue. Due to heavy traffic on Prospect Street and on Massachusetts Avenue, officers began to re-route motor vehicle traffic, bicyclists and pedestrians to ensure the protesters' safety. While operating a marked Cambridge Police cruiser with blue lights activated, a protestor drove in front of a police cruiser near Massachusetts and Pearl Street to a complete stop, preventing an officer from moving their vehicle. A crowd then surrounded an officer and police cruiser for approximately two minutes. The moped operator then moved his moped and drove down the bicycle lane. Moments later, the officer observed the moped operator at a gas station pumping fuel into his moped while the protesters continued their march on Massachusetts Ave. The officer asked to see the operator’s driver's license/ moped registration and explained the reason for the stop. While recording the operator’s information, the operator standed on his moped waving his arms to the protesters, advocating for them to come over to help him. Protestors began to approach the officer’s cruiser and attempted to surround him once again. In the interest of officer safety, the operator’s driver's license was given to one of the protesters who then handed the driver's license back to the owner and the officer drove away. As a result of these actions, the moped operator will be summonsed for Willfully Obstructing an Emergency Vehicle, No Registration, and Incite to Riot.
