Jivan Sobrinho-Wheeler

Headshot of Councilor Sobrinho-Wheeler

Jivan Sobrinho-Wheeler is serving his first term on the Cambridge City Council. Prior to joining the Council, Jivan worked with environmental programs at the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, a nationally-recognized land policy think tank based in Cambridge. His work involved collaborating with land trusts, academic institutions, and community organizations in New England and around the world to find the tools they need to build sustainable communities.

Jivan is a renter and has been involved in campaigns to support residents who face eviction, steep increases in rent, and poor living conditions like mold, lack of heat, and flooding with City Life / Vida Urbana and Boston DSA. He has also advocated for climate change resiliency planning, tenant protections, and safe streets and better public transportation.

Jivan is the son of a woman who grew up on a farm in Iowa and a man who grew up in the Portuguese colony of Goa in India. As a result, he speaks Portuguese, is conversational in Spanish, and has eaten a lot of sweet corn with butter.

Jivan has a BA in Human Ecology from College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, ME. He lives between Harvard and Central Squares in a triple-decker with his three roommates.

Jivan is happy to meet with residents and advocates during times that work for them. He can be reached directly at @cambridgema.gov. You can also follow him on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
