Merge Conceptual Design

#invisible

#invisible is a 2-part installation that commemorates the 100th anniversary of women’s voting rights. Celebrating this essential marker on the long road to a truly egalitarian society, we also turn our gaze to the invisible.

Part one, in the Cambridge Commons, consists of an auditorium, centered around a ballot box, that can serve as a lectern for assemblies, discussions or democracy workshops. Part two takes the ballot box to 20 locations around the city, using it as a carrier for 20 stories about women from different backgrounds and centuries, known and unknown, representing the many facets of the struggle for equal rights and suffrage. Diverse, playful, and evocative also of the stories that have been omitted, this selection invites the community to complement it with their own experiences.

Democracy is not a given. It is a constant process of growing awareness for the many parts that make up a country.
