MBTA Begins Retaining Wall Repair at Porter Square

The MBTA has begun work near the Porter Square Station. The purpose of this work is to repair the retaining wall along the Porter Square Station. The retaining wall is located along the sidewalk on Somerville Ave, and spans from Somerville to the Cambridge City line. This work will be performed by the MBTA and is scheduled to begin mid-September 2020. 

The MBTA will be hosting a Virtual Public Meeting for this project, which is scheduled to take place on November 5th, from 6p-7p. For details on how to register, please visit the project webpage listed below.

The schedule for this project is:

September 8 (Tuesday) Northeast Traffic to install signage. 

September 9 (Wednesday): Line striping to be completed by Mark-A-Lot

September 10 (Thursday): SPS Mobilization Activities

September 11 (Friday): SPS Mobilization Activities

Week of September 14: Select Demo to begin demolition.

Week of September 21: Select Demo to continue demolition and conclude operations by 9/25/2020.

Week of September 27: Demolition completes and GTR implements vibration monitoring. 

Week of October 4: GTR implements vibration monitoring.

Week of October 11:  Keller NA mobilizes for sheet pile driving operation.

Week of October 19: Excavation of existing material to be removed from site.

Week of 11/15: Implement Vibration Monitoring, Install Sheet Piles

Week of 11/22: Excavation of existing material

November 23/24: Demolition/disposal of exisiting granite blocks in front of MWRA Water Main

November 26: No work on site - Thanksgiving

Week of 11/30: Continue excavation

Week of 12/14: Continue to install new subgrade material

Week of 12/21: Form and Pour Leveling Pads

December 25: No work on site - Christmas

Week of 12/28 - Begin installation of T-Wall Units

January 1: No work on site - New Years Day

Week of 1/10: Remove leveling pad formwork and curing material. Prepare for delivery of first T-Wall segments. Begin Setting T-Wall.

Week of 1/17: Continue installing T-Wall segments.

Week of 1/24: Continue installing T-Wall segments.

Week of 3/7: Prepare for and take delivery of pre-cast moment slab and barrier wall sections.

Week of 3/14: Finish setting moment slab and begin backfilling sidewalk. It is also anticipated the that T-Wall closure pour will take place.

Week of 3/21: Continue preparing sidewalk subgrade and installation of granite curb.

Week of 3/21: Continue preparing sidewalk subgrade and installation of granite curb.

Week of 3/28: Pour Sidewalk and strip existing HMA.

Week of 4/4: Pave work area.
