DPW offices at 147 Hampshire St. are open to the public, by appointment only. Appointments can be made by phone at 617-349-4800 or by email at theworks@cambridgema.gov. Individual staff are also available for appointments outside of these hours as needed; please contact the office with the details of your issue, and we will coordinate with the appropriate staff member. Many DPW services can be provided online, and DPW phones are staffed 24/7 to respond to urgent concerns.

  • Cambridge Curbside Composting Resumes Monday, May 17

    Curbside compost is available to all residential buildings with city trash collection. Composting reduces trash going to landfills and converts food scraps into clean energy. Separating food waste from trash bins and placing it in lockable curbside compost carts also helps manage rodents in the community.

  • Spring Showers Bring Discounted Rain Barrels to Cambridge Residents

    The City of Cambridge is partnering with the Great American Rain Barrel Program to offer interested Cambridge residents the opportunity to purchase a rain barrel at a discounted rate of $69. With more time spent at home in 2020, gardening has become a form of solace for many residents in the wake of the pandemic. To water these new gardens, residents are encouraged to take advantage of the discounted rain barrels. This method of irrigation conserves energy and money, while remaining environmentally conscientious.

  • Service Information and Schedule for Patriots Day Holiday

    Curbside collections, including trash, recycling, compost, and yard waste, will be suspended and one day behind for the remainder of the week. Street cleaning will also be suspended for the holiday. Regularly scheduled street cleaning routes for Monday, April 19 will be swept on Thursday, April 29, 2021.

  • Partial Roadway Paving Enhancments

    Beginning April 20th, weather permitting, the City’s contractor, E J Paving, will be performing partial roadway grinding and paving operations to enhance the road conditions on several sections of street around the City. The roadway grinding operation at each location is expected take two days followed by paving of the roadway later that same week, or the following week (weather permitting). For a list of street sections to be re-surfaced, please see below.

  • Two-Year Anniversary of Mattress Recycling

    In two years, the City has diverted over 10,000 mattresses weighing 600,000 pounds from landfills.

  • Construction Moratorium Lifted

    The Department of Public Works winter moratorium on excavations in the public right of way ends on March 22, 2021 at 7:00am.
