Intern With Cambridge Arts

Internship Positions: 

Community Arts Program Assistants

  • All positions are unpaid part-time (10-15 hours per week) immersive, hands-on, learning experiences.        

General Description:

The Cambridge Arts Council views their internship program to be a growth opportunity for both the intern and the agency.  Cambridge Arts Community Arts Interns will be under close supervision, guidance and mentorship of the Community Arts Administrator and will work very closely with a variety of professionals in different fields, including government & city agencies, local businesses, cultural & community organizations, artists, and more.  Interns will assist in the implementation of Cambridge Arts Community Arts Programs as needed.  Tasks may include but are not limited to: communicating with artists and community members, creation and distribution of materials, conducting audience surveys, tracking proposals and activities, negotiating and creating contracts, scheduling and booking events, maintaining budgets, grant writing, sponsor cultivation, etc.  It is a great opportunity for the intern to learn event production, marketing strategies, grant processes and procedures, industry standards, general office experience, etc. It is also a tremendous way to build valuable hands-on work experience and networks in the field of arts administration. Cambridge Arts staff will work with the intern to identify a project area below to focus on based on his/her strengths and ambitions. 

Programs & Positions:

  • Cambridge River Festival Production Assistant includes soliciting sponsorships, conducting performer research, communicating with stage hosts & performers, coordinating with key personal, arranging infrastructure orders, building contracts, maintaining budgets, etc.
  • Cambridge River Festival Interactive Art Areas Coordinator is responsible for curating and managing the interactive art areas for the Cambridge Arts River Festival.  Interactive art areas are designated locations for artists and organizations to engage with festival goers through interactive experiences, such as storytelling and poetry, as well as hands-on art making activities. The person who fills this position will be responsible for selecting artists to lead interactive areas, coordinating locations, and communicating all logistical information.
  • Cambridge River Festival Volunteer Coordinator is in charge of acquiring and managing volunteers for the Cambridge Arts River Festival.  The event attracts over 175,000 participants and features 6 performances stages.  Volunteers are a vital part of mounting this large event, the Volunteer Coordinator and the volunteers they oversee, will touch nearly every aspect of the day-of event infrastructure and execution and are integral to the event’s success. 
  • Cambridge River Festival Community Tables Coordinator is responsible for contacting, curating, coordinating, and supporting a ‘showcase’ area at the Cambridge Arts River Festival designated for local non-profit arts and social service organizations that serve the Cambridge community to promote their mission and goals.
  • Cambridge River Festival Vendor Coordinator Assistant will work in tandem with the Vendor Coordinator to curate, manage, and oversee the food and arts/crafts vendors that participate in the Cambridge Arts River Festival.  Nearly 150 vendors participate in the event.  The Coordinator Assistant will be responsible for reviewing applications, selecting vendors to participate, and communicating with selected vendors to provide them with necessary logical information for the event under the guidance and direction of the Vendor Coordinator. NOTE:  The 2020 Cambridge Arts River Festival will take place on Saturday, June 6th.  All internship positions with the River Festival require intern to be present at the event and will provide hands on day of event management experience.
  • Summer in City Production Assistant includes curating and booking artists/performers, building contracts, connecting with community schools and day camp facilities, identifying performance park locations and rain sites, completing park permits and other associated paperwork, working with Cambridge Arts marketing staff to design marketing materials and strategies, managing budgets, soliciting grants and other sponsorship support, etc.   Summer in the City takes place in July and August. 
  • Cambridge Open Studios Assistant includes updating web registration forms and other related materials, create and distribute call to artists, sit on advisory panel, communicate with artists, secure common venues etc.  Open Studios takes place the last weekend in September.  The person selected for this role would be required to be present on both days of the event. 

Additional Responsibilities:

  • All internships include general office duties such as: answering phones, interfacing with the public, processing Street Performer Permits, maintaining filing systems and databases, updating web pages, conducting audience development research, etc.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Excellent organizational skills with great attention to detail
  • Very strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Familiarity with Windows Operating Systems and MSOffice software
  • Experience with graphic design programs (Photoshop, InDesign) highly desirable
  • Arts background and office experience preferred
  • Creativity & sense of humor a plus
  • Senior Level Undergraduate or Graduate Level Candidates preferred
