Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine Booster Shot Recommended for Some Groups

A booster shot is an extra dose of a vaccine that can help 'boost' the immune system to better protect against disease. COVID-19 vaccines work very well to protect against serious illness and death. However, protection against more moderate disease may decrease over time. Recent research shows that a Pfizer COVID-19 booster shot strengthens the immune response in people who had had their second Pfizer shot at least 6 months earlier.

Who is eligible for a booster?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that the following groups should receive a booster shot of the Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine at least 6 months after receiving the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine:

• People aged 65 years and older
• Residents aged 18 years and older in long-term care settings
• People aged 50 – 64 years with underlying medical conditions

CDC also recommends that the following groups may receive a booster shot of the Pfizer vaccine, based on individual risks and benefits:

• People aged 18-49 years of age with underlying medical conditions
• People aged 18-64 years who are at higher risk for COVID-19 because of work (first responders, educators, health care workers, others) or living settings (e.g., correctional facilities, homeless shelters)

Where can I get a booster?

Massachusetts residents will have a range of choices for receiving Pfizer COVID-19 booster doses, including at more than 460 retail pharmacies. To locate a convenient location for getting a Pfizer COVID-19 booster:

• Visit vaxfinder.mass.gov. Select a location and schedule an appointment online.
• If you are unable to use vaxfinder, call 2-1-1, the COVID-19 Vaccine Resource Line (Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM, Saturday and Sunday 9AM-2PM). The COVID-19 Vaccine Resource Line is available in English and Spanish and has translators available in approximately 100 additional languages.

What if I received a Moderna or Johnson & Johnson Vaccine?

Research into booster shots for the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson COVID vaccines is ongoing. Boosters are not yet approved for either of these vaccines but are expected to be approved and recommended soon.

When am I eligible for a Pfizer Booster?

To see when you are eligible for a booster shot, review your Vaccination Record Card for the date of your second shot of Pfizer COVID vaccine. You are eligible 6 months after this date. If you do not have your vaccination record, visit www.mass.gov/myvaxrecord to learn how to request a copy.
