The Cambridge Police Department (CPD) accepts and processes applications for License to Carry (LTC) & Firearm Identification Card (FID).

Additional Information

CPD will only accept and process License to Carry (LTC) & Firearm Identification Card (FID) applications that are complete. It is the applicant's responsibility to know the type of license they wish to apply for i.e. Class A, B, C, FID, and FID Chemical (Pepper Spray).

What are the required documents?

Applicants must provide the following required documentation - ORIGINALS ONLY; COPIES NOT ACCEPTED:

  • A utility bill (light, gas, cable, land line phone or lease agreement) in your name.
  • Cell phone bills will not be accepted.
  • If you cannot provide a utility bill in your name, a typed notarized letter from the
  • person(s) you reside with.
  • A Massachusetts driver's license or Massachusetts Identification card displaying your
  • Cambridge address. Temporary licenses will not be accepted.
  • A birth certificate or passport.
  • If a Naturalized citizen, please provide the Naturalization Certificate.
  • Permanent Resident Alien must have a Green Card.
  • Original Firearms Safety Certificate*
  • 2 Typed letters from References (non-family)
  • A Typed letter addressed to Deputy DeFrancesco stating your reason for issuance of a LTC/FID

First Time Applicants

All first time LTC/FID applicants - except FID - chemical propellant are required to attend and successfully complete a Firearms Safety Course presented by a certified State of Massachusetts Instructor. All first time applicants should complete the following form, along with the following: 

  • Firearms Safety Certificate or Hunting Safety Course Certificate from a certified MA instructor. Active military personnel are exempted from Firearm and Hunting Safety Certificates requirement.

  • Two typed letters of reference from persons (Non-family members) who can attest to Applicant’s character and suitability to possess and carry firearms. Full name and contact information of person providing reference must be included in the letter. Both letters must be original and hand signed.

  • A letter written by LTC/FID Applicant addressed to Deputy Superintendent Pauline Carter-Wells detailing Applicant’s purpose for owning and/or carrying firearms.


Hours of Operation for First Time Applicants and Renewals

SERVICE ADVISORY: The Cambridge Police Records Unit will be open to members of the public without appointments on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. In-person public appointments will continue to be offered Monday-Friday. Appointments can be made online. Limited fingerprint services will be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays between the hours of 9:30-11:30 a.m. by appointment only.  For questions or further assistance, please call 617-349-3336 or e-mail.

Costs and Payment Methods

The following are the costs for each type of license and payment methods accepted.

LTC/FID applicants

  • A non-refundable application fee of $100.00 and is good for 6 years. (payable by cash or check only)
  • Fees are waived for renewal applicants 70 years of age or older.
  • FID applicants under 18 accompanied by a parent or guardian with a letter $25.00
  • FID-Chemical (Pepper Spray) - a one-time fee of $25.00 (payable by cash or check only)
    with free renewals every 6 years.
