Fire Can Happen Anywhere. In recognition of National Fire Prevention Week, Cambridge Fire Departments urges you to follow these helpful tips from the 2018 themeLook.  Listen.  Learn.

  • Look for places fire could start
  • Listen for the sound of the smoke alarm
  • Learn two ways out of every room
Basic fire safety points we should all review are:
  • Keep anything that can catch fire away from your stovetop.
  • All heaters need space. Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet from heating equipment.
  • Make sure everyone in your home knows the alarm sound and what to do if they hear it.
  • Make sure doors and windows are not blocked.
  • Get outside to your meeting place.

Fire safety can be a team activity for families, housemates, and neighbors. Practice fire safety and exit drills as a group. We should watch out for each other, especially our older folks and pets. We should also be diligent in maintaining and testing our smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. A sprinkler system provides even better protection. Acting Fire Chief Gerry Mahoney reminds us of the real benefit of residential sprinkler systems. When a fire starts, fire sprinklers activate immediately to contain the unfriendly fire. Fire sprinklers save lives! When building or renovating a home, seriously consider the installation of a sprinkler system. Even if not required by code, a residential sprinkler system will pay huge dividends.

Let’s work together to make every week in Cambridge a fire prevention week. Prevent fires and fire-related injuries. Stay safe.
