Description

When: 7:15 - 8:45PM on fifteen alternate Tuesdays between Columbus Day and Memorial Day.

Reading Interests: We read primarily from anthologies that emphasize ancient and modern classics of literature, drama, philosophy, and social thought. In recent years the group has read selections from The Book of Job, Aeschylus, Plato, Montaigne, Donne, William James, Cady Stanton, Baldwin, and Borges. These may run anywhere from 20 to 100 pages. Additional books, chosen by the group, tend to be more contemporary. Those read in the last three years include Adiga's Between the Assassinations, Welty's The Golden Apples, Camus's The Plague, Woolf’s To the Lighthouse, DuBois's The Souls of Black Folk, and Garcia Marquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude. A Shakespeare play is read every year.

Requirements: There are only two: read the scheduled work and participate in the discussion. These requirements are waived for those attending their first meeting. Preregistration is not required but is encouraged, since the library will provide, in advance and at no charge, a copy of the reading for anyone planning to attend.
