RAIN OR SHINE: The Cambridge Science Festival, the first of its kind in the United States, is a celebration showcasing the leading edge in science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM).  A multifaceted, multicultural event, the Festival makes science accessible, interactive and fun, highlighting the impact of STEAM in all our lives.

As part of the Festival, Cambridge Public Safety Agencies will be hosting "The Science Behind Public Safety" on Thursday, April 19th from 10 -1 p.m. at the Robert W. Healy Public Safety Facility, which is located at 125 6th Street in Cambridge.

Families and participants will have an opportunity to meet and hear from:

  • Cambridge Emergency Communications Department
  • Cambridge Fire Department
  • Pro EMS
  • Animal Control
  • Multiple Cambridge Police units, including the Explosive Ordinance Unit and their K-9s, Special Response Team Unit, Traffic Unit, Crime Analysis Unit, Special Investigations Unit, Crime Scene Services Unit and Community Services Unit.

Attendees will be able to observe and experience different public safety tools and technologies such as using a fire hose from a fire truck, gauging your heart and pulse, learning CPR, as well as robotic detection, radar and LIDAR traffic systems, crash scene investigations, crime analysis systems, drug testing kits, and more. Dispatchers from Emergency Communications will walk interested participants through the 9-1-1 and dispatch process, while Pro EMS will also be providing Narcan administration and ambulance demos.

Mostly interested in crime scene science? Join the talented Crime Scene Service specialists with the Cambridge Police Department as they demonstrate how they process major crime scenes and collect evidence. Participants will have an opportunity to learn more about the myths and realities involved in processing a crime scene, understand how to handle fingerprints, walk through the steps to package and ultimately analyze key evidence, and test some of the Crime Scene tools and technology.

Finally, participants can climb in each of the public safety vehicles and take photos of and with them.

Drop-In – Everyone is Welcome! All are invited to attend this FREE Cambridge Science Festival event. Pre-registration is encouraged for the Crime Scene Services presentation: http://bit.ly/2FSXRDf.
