Join Lamplighter and the Cambridge Public Library for our virtual book club, where we celebrate contemporary fiction from new voices.

Please register here.

You’re invited to the second joint book club session hosted by Lamp and CPL staff! This month, we’ll begin to focus on contemporary fiction from BIPOC and Queer/Trans writers. We’ll read America is Not the Heart by Elaine Castillo—a nationally acclaimed 2018 novel described as “a sprawling, soulful debut about three generations of women in one family struggling to balance the promise of the American dream and the unshakeable grip of history. With exuberance, grit, and sly tenderness, here is a family saga; an origin story; a romance; a narrative of two nations and the people who leave one home to grasp at another.” Then we’ll gather on Monday, October 5th, from 7-9pm, to discuss this novel, what we learned from it, what we found ourselves moved by, and what about the book was hard and/or beautiful.

You can check out America is Not the Heart now through the Cambridge Public Library at this link; you do not need to be a Cambridge resident to check out a copy, you just need a library card! If you don’t yet have a library card, or if you’d like to borrow one of Lamp’s copies of this book, email us at gbonfiglio@lamplighterbrewing.com.

CPL has set aside a finite number of books, which can be picked up during the Main Library's hours of operation. If those copies run out, you can also access the ebook* on OverDrive or with the Libby app using a Minuteman Network library card.

*Request the ebook by September 18 to make sure you have enough time to read it before our meeting

This event is free, with an optional, additional donation to Cosecha MA, a grassroots movement led by undocumented Americans fighting for dignity for all immigrants. You can also purchase beer pack that features two of our recent donation based beers: Banchan, a light, tart Wheat Ale, Siembra, a Hefeweizen, and Power to the People, an India Pale Lager. We’ll begin our session by talking a bit about these beers, so purchase this pack for a ~multidisciplinary learning experience!
