      We are now accepting returns of any Minuteman Library Network materials at the O'Connell Branch, generally Tuesdays and Fridays, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Leave your items in the large basket outside the door. For your health and safety, please do not touch any other items in the returns basket. It may take up to one week for items to be removed from your card. During the COVID-19 crisis, no overdue fines are being charged on any materials checked out of Cambridge Public Library locations. You may also return any Minuteman Library Network materials via the Main Library outside book drop (available 24/7). We are also offering limited return hours at other branch locations, subject to scheduling changes. Please check the library calendar or call the Main Library at 617-349-4040 for up-to-date information on return hours at all locations.

      October Book Selection: Celestial Bodies by Jokha Alharthi Reading Interests: The group concentrates on fiction, memoirs, and popular nonfiction. Some of the past selections include: Lost Children Archive by Valeria Luiselli, On Immunity by Eula Biss, and Disoriental by Négar Djavadi. Requirements: A love of reading and talking about books. The group is casual and informal. Copies of the book are available at the Main Library Question and Answer Desk. Registration is required.       Join the Cambridge Public Library Foundation on Tuesday, October 20 at 6:30 p.m. for DREAM BIG 2020, a special conversation between Harvard Professor Jill Lepore and Executive Director of the American Library Association Tracie D. Hall. Jill Lepore is the David Woods Kemper ’41 Professor of American History at Harvard University and is also a staff writer at The New Yorker. Lepore is a two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist and her many books include the international bestseller These Truths and This America. In February 2020, Tracie D. Hall was appointed the American Library Association’s 10th executive director in its 143-year history. In her new role, Hall oversees the oldest and largest library association in the world, made up of 57,000 members and more than 200 staffers. Hall is the first female African American executive director in the ALA’s history. Jill and Tracie will be discussing Jill’s new book,If Then: How the Simulmatics Corporation Invented the Future, and how the early work of a little-known company in the 1960s was a precursor to today’s world of Big Data surveillance and advertising psych-ops. Signed copies of Jill Lepore's If Then and These Truths can be purchased from Porter Square Books using this special link. A portion of the proceeds will support the Cambridge Public Library!
