Would you like to make your own vinyl signs, stickers, or images to transfer to T-shirts and other textiles? In this workshop, you can learn how to use our Roland Camm-1 GS-24 vinyl cutter. You can then design a sticker and cut it with our vinyl cutter! Registration is required.

Innovators for Purpose (iFp) Studio is a teen-powered design and innovation program where teens channel their energy and creative vision to imagine and build a better world. Blending art, design, science, technology, and storytelling within a social justice framework, teens engage in real-world client-sponsored projects.
Innovators for Purpose (iFp) is a Cambridge-based nonprofit that inspires high-potential, diverse young people to discover their passions, develop innovative mindsets and cultivate marketable skills to solve problems they care most about. Summer Studio teens are funded in part through the Mayor's Summer Youth Employment Program. The Cambridge Public Library STEAM Academy is part of Cambridge STEAM Initiative's efforts to enhance and expand students’ access to quality STEAM learning experiences. Learn how to cut, engrave, and shape designs from a variety of materials using the Glowforge Pro laser cutter in this 2-day workshop. This series of workshops replaces the previous Glowforge 101 and Glowforge 201 offerings.
In part 1 of this course, you will utilize the camera for focusing and scanning your own custom images, properly select materials for your project, and fabricate your first design. In part 2, you will create digital artwork for the Glowforge, and learn file formatting for production.
Note: This is a badging course for laser cutting. Signing up for part 1 of this series registers you to participate in part 2 the next day. You will be badged at the end of the part 2 workshop, and are able to reserve the Glowforge Pro for use during designated times.

May's Read: Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro
Reading Interests: The group concentrates on science fiction and fantasy. An advanced reading schedule is published each fall. Example selections include: Neuromancer by William Gibson and The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch.
Requirements: A love of speculative fiction and a desire to talk about books. The group is friendly and informal.
How to get the print book: Copies of the print book are set aside at the Main Library Question and Answer desk on the ground floor. Visit the Main Library at 449 Broadway during service hours and a staff member can help you check out a copy.

Join book conservator, Sam Ellenport, for an illustrated talk on the history of linked spine bindings, a little known aspect of bookbinding decoration used on sets of books. The binder makes use of the entire rectangle comprised of all the spines as a canvas on which to produce an overall design, whether representational or abstract.
Sam Ellenport has been a hand-bookbinder since he bought the Harcourt Bindery in Boston over 40 years ago. Trained as an historian, Ellenport has written and lectured about the history of the craft throughout the country. He is a passionate collector of books about binding. Committed to education, Ellenport helped establish the bookbinding program at the North Bennet Street School in 1986 and remains an advisor. He has served in various positions among book-related organizations. As a witness to the great sea-change occurring today in the book arts, Ellenport remains a defender of the classic aesthetic developed around the physical book.
