    • Beginner ESOL Class (Central Square)

      Join us for an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Class. This class will be taught at a beginner level. No testing is needed. For more information call Maria Balestrieri at 617-349-4013.

      Music. Movement. Story. Join your librarians outside for 20 minutes of fun! Children of all ages and their grown-ups. This program will be held in Joan Lorentz Park on the lawn outside the Main Library. In the event of inclement weather, this program will be canceled. Please call 617-349-4038 for more information.

      We invite children and their grown-ups to join us for 20-25 minutes of songs, stories and rhymes. This program will be held in the Reading Garden on the Berkshire Street side of the Valente Branch. In the event of inclement weather, this program will move indoors, where seating is limited.       During this reservation period, anyone who has completed Hive training and is badged to use equipment or studio(s) can reserve Hive equipment or studio spaces. Staff will assist participants as they are able.

      Get your bike in great riding shape with a free bicycle check-up. Professional mechanics from Landry's Bicycles will be on hand to asses your bike, make small repairs or adjustments, and offer advice. This program takes place at the O'Connell Branch, 48 Sixth St., Wednesday, June 29 between 2:30 and 4:30. FREE! Registration is required.       The Community Preservation Act (CPA) was created by state law (G.L. c. 44B) to help cities and towns preserve the character of their community. In 2001, Cambridge residents voted to adopt the CPA locally, which allowed the City to implement a 3% surcharge on Property Tax bills to fund eligible projects.

      As requested by the City Council, the Community Development Department will convene an Alewife Overlay District Zoning Working Group to recommend zoning and design principles that will result in new zoning for adoption. This is the first meeting of the Working Group.

    • Glowforge 101: Creative Laser Cutting, Pt.2 (Main)

      Main Library, 449 Broadway, Cambridge, MA 02138

      Learn how to cut, engrave, and shape designs from a variety of materials using the Glowforge Pro laser cutter in this 2-day workshop. This series of workshops replaces the previous Glowforge 101 and Glowforge 201 offerings. In part 1 of this course, you will utilize the camera for focusing and scanning your own custom images, properly select materials for your project, and fabricate your first design. In part 2, you will create digital artwork for the Glowforge, and learn file formatting for production. Note: This is a badging course for laser cutting. Signing up for part 1 of this series registers you to participate in part 2 the next day. You will be badged at the end of the part 2 workshop, and are able to reserve the Glowforge Pro for use during designated times.
