    • STEAM Academy: Innovators for Purpose Summer Studio

      Main Library, Community Room, 449 Broadway, Cambridge, MA 02138

      Innovators for Purpose (iFp) Studio is a teen-powered design and innovation program where teens channel their energy and creative vision to imagine and build a better world. Blending art, design, science, technology and storytelling within a social justice framework, teens engage in real-world client-sponsored projects. July 5 - August 5, weekdays from 9:15am-3:30pm at the Main Library Innovators for Purpose (iFp) is a Cambridge-based nonprofit that inspires high-potential, diverse young people to discover their passions, develop innovative mindsets and cultivate marketable skills to solve problems they care most about. Summer Studio teens are funded in part through the Mayor's Summer Youth Program. The Cambridge Public Library STEAM Academy is part Cambridge STEAM Initiative's efforts to enhance and expand students’ access to quality STEAM learning experiences. Made possible by generous support from the Eric and Jane Nord Family Fund and Verizon.

    • Summer Reading: Exploring China Through Music and Story with Shaw Pong Liu (Valente)

      Valente Branch, 826 Cambridge St., Cambridge, MA 02141

      From the grasslands of Mongolia to the high mountain of Yunnan, master musician Shaw Pong Liu takes audiences on a musical journey through historical and contemporary China. Her suitcase packed with languages and musical instruments, Shaw Pong weaves history, geography, the Mandarin language and Chinese folk music in a dynamic exploration of China. Shaw Pong Liu is a violinist who is fluent in both western and Chinese musical traditions. She is also a composer, a teaching artist and an activist. She engages diverse communities with creative music and social dialogue by innovating the audience experience of live music. Collaborating with artists from a wide range of disciplines, Shaw Pong creates genre-defying performances which interplay written and improvised music with narration, storytelling and movement. This program will take place in person at the Valente Branch Library. This program can accommodate 50 people. Tickets are available on a first come, first served basis on the day of the program. The entire party must be present to receive a ticket. This program starts promptly, and unfortunately we cannot accommodate latecomers. Unclaimed seats will be offered to someone waiting.       Join friends and neighbors for a potluck! What does local cooking mean to you? This month's cookbook is themed and can be any book or recipe relating to food traditions in New England! Since this month is themed rather than a specific book, possible titles include: New England Open-House Cookbook by Sarah Chase with Ina Garten The New Boston Globe Cookbook edited by Sheryl Julian New England Cookbook: 350 Recipes from Town and Country, Land and Sea, Hearth and Home by Brooke Dojny The New New England Cookbook: 125 Traditional Dishes by Stacy Cogswell Try a recipe and bring your results or thoughts to share and discuss with other cooks. All experience levels welcome! A form for sharing what recipe you might be cooking is available by clicking here. This event will take place outdoors.
