    • Marking Their Place in History: Cambridge Black Trailblazers

      Join us for an exhibit of Cambridge Black Trailblazers, curated by the Cambridge Black History Project, on display at the Main Library from January 26 to February 28. Fifteen extraordinary Black Cantabrigians, whose lives and accomplishments have often been overlooked, will be featured in this exhibition: Roy Allen, Actor, TV Stage Manager, Director, Producer, Creator Joyce London Alexander, Chief US Magistrate Judge Barbara Ward Armstrong, Artist, Musician, Creator Olive Benson, Innovative Hair-Care Entrepreneur Calvin Burnett, Daring Artist and Gifted Teacher Dr. June Christmas, Pioneer in Public Health Dr. Cheryl Townsend Gilkes, Faith and Action Charles LeRoy Gittens, Secret Service Agent Johnny Hodges, Jazz Saxophonist Extraordinaire Kittie Towle Knox, Cycling Pioneer and Champion Racer Gertrude Wright Morgan, Teacher and a Force for Change Henry F. Owens, Entrepreneur Elizabeth Miller Rawlins, Teacher, Educational Leader, and Advocate for Educational Equity and Opportunity Gus Solomons Jr., Contemporary Dancer, Innovator, Mentor Leon West, Chef The exhibit is on display in the lobby, on the second floor, and on the gallery wall on L2. Illustrated bookmarks, created by the Cambridge Black History Project detailing the lives of these Black Trailblazers, will be available. Join us for an opening reception on January 26 at 6:30 pm.

      Innovators for Purpose (iFp) Studio is a teen-powered design and innovation program where teens channel their energy and creative vision to imagine and build a better world. Blending art, design, science, technology, and storytelling within a social justice framework, teens engage in real-world client-sponsored projects. Innovators for Purpose (iFp) is a Cambridge-based nonprofit that inspires high-potential, diverse young people to discover their passions, develop innovative mindsets and cultivate marketable skills to solve problems they care most about. Summer Studio teens are funded in part through the Mayor's Summer Youth Employment Program. The Cambridge Public Library STEAM Academy is part of Cambridge STEAM Initiative's efforts to enhance and expand students’ access to quality STEAM learning experiences.       People of all ages and sewing abilities are welcome to come to the Library and create a square for our Community Quilt. Using fabric markers, glue or a needle and thread, your unique piece of fabric art will contribute to our collective creation. The additional time for creating quilt square is Saturday February 4, 2-3p.m. We will work on constructing our quilt on Saturday February 11, 1:30-4:30 p.m. This series is part of the O'Neill Community Quilt Project.       Reception: 6-7 pm Talk: 7-8 pm Join us to celebrate the official launch of CBHP’s new series of Trailblazer Bookmarks, which honors the extraordinary lives of Black Cantabrigians whose accomplishments have often been overlooked. An evening of music, mingling, and discussion will salute these individuals whose influence reaches far beyond our city limits. Eight new bookmarks will be unveiled: Barbara Ward Armstrong, Artist, Musician, Creator Olive Benson, Innovative Hair-Care Entrepreneur Calvin Burnett, Daring Artist and Gifted Teacher Dr. June Christmas, Pioneer in Public Health Dr. Cheryl Townsend Gilkes, Faith and Action Johnny Hodges, Jazz Saxophonist Extraordinaire Kittie Towle Knox, Cycling Pioneer and Champion Racer Gus Solomons Jr., Contemporary Dancer, Innovator, Mentor The opening reception will feature music by jazz and classical musician Joel LaRue Smith, followed by a program recognizing these and other remarkable individuals.
