In this 90-minute workshop, you’ll learn the basics of sewing machine operation and safety. This session will cover machine setup, basic functions, threading the machine, reloading the bobbin, sewing straight stitches, and recognizing when stitch tension has gone awry. We’ll also cover some safety best practices when operating a sewing machine. As we learn together, we’ll work on a simple sewing project—a drawstring bag—which most students will be able to complete by the end of the class.
You must complete Hive Safety Training before registering for this workshop.

Green Cambridge joins us in inviting you to a special After School Stories & Crafts this week to launch the Sixth Annual Cambridge City Nature Art Challenge (for grades 1–5 and upper school students). Continue building your machine-sewing skills AND create bespoke sewn crafts! Design your own fiber arts adventure as you choose from a menu of options including: bento bag, fleece hat, fleece mittens, work belt, earbud case and fanny pack. This four-part series is led by fiber artist and designer Lenni Armstrong.

Join the Cambridge Public Library in welcoming three award-winning authors—Nina MacLaughlin, Joan Wickersham, and Lucy Ives—for readings from their latest books.
Nina MacLaughlin—a recent winner of a Massachusetts Book Award—will read from Winter Solstice.
Joan Wickersham—whose memoir The Suicide Index was a finalist for the National Book Award—will read from No Ship Sets Out to Be a Shipwreck.
Lucy Ives—a poet, novelist, and essayist—will read from An Image of My Name Enters America.
After the reading, there will be a short audience Q&A and book signing.
