Just Mercy (2014) is a memoir by civil rights attorney Bryan Stevenson about his work in the late 1980's defending incarcerated individuals on Alabama's death row. He tells the story of different people who have been placed on death row mostly as a result of a faulty legal system that unfairly treats individuals who are poor and Black. The book was adapted into a movie in 2019, starring Michael B. Jordan, Brie Larson and Jamie Foxx.
In what ways have things changed, now that it is almost 40 years later? Come to the Teen Room anytime this month to pick up a copy of Bryan Stevenson's book. Then join us on Thursday February 20th to watch the movie. After the movie we will discuss the movie and the memoir.
No registration necessary. Reading the book is encouraged but not required.
CONTENT WARNING: both the memoir and the movie address real-life situations of poverty, violent crime, incarceration, and abuse and may not be appropriate for younger teens. This program is recommended for ages 14-18.
