Extended Barricade Incident in East Cambridge Ends Peacefully

An extended barricade situation in East Cambridge ended peacefully this morning after approximately four hours.

Cambridge Police initially responded to Sciarappa Street on the report of gunshots at 2:12 a.m. A suspect was then reportedly observed entering an apartment where the the barricade took place.

Officers attempted to communicate with the involved individual — which included the use of a loud speaker — and peacefully de-escalate the situation with hopes of him surrendering. At the same time, they were able to safely evacuate other occupants from the multi-floor residential building. Messages were issued to residents in the immediate area asking them to shelter in place.

Shortly before 6:30 a.m., a male was ultimately detained without incident and transported to the police station. There were no injuries.

After the barricade was resolved, a firearm was recovered outside the residence — inside of a vehicle — and near ballistic evidence that was recovered earlier in the investigation.

While a male suspect was detained and identified, charges have not been filed at this time. Additional follow-up investigative work is being conducted on the shooting, ballistic evidence and the recovered firearm.
