Academy/Training Unit

The Academy/Training Unit is responsible for coordinating and directing the Police Department's training efforts. The Academy also maintains training records and files for each officer, facilitates sending officers to training outside the Department and distributes training materials and legal updates to Department members.

The Cambridge Police Academy is the principal location for the Department's In-Service Training Program for sworn officers. Police officers in Massachusetts are required to attend at least 40 hours of in-service training each year. Officers receive updated information and instruction in a wide variety of subjects.

The Cambridge-Northeastern Police Academy is the principal location for the Cambridge Police Department's new officer ("recruit") training. The Academy lasts 20 weeks, and each recruit is required to complete the entire program before he/she can become a sworn member of the Cambridge Police Department.

For information about becoming a Cambridge Police Officer, visit our Recruitment and Employment page.
