Poem red on riser of red staircase

Greetings to Cambridge Public Library patrons and neighbors. I hope this message finds you and your families well, amidst this most difficult time.

Although the Library’s physical locations are closed due to the COVID-19 health crisis, there is still a small-but-mighty staff team actively working to continue providing library services for you!  I want to thank the support services team who are checking on our facilities, office staff who are processing payroll and invoices, and our entire Library Team for caring so much about library programs and services for patrons and residents during this public health crisis.

As a result of our recent efforts, we are proud to announce a new resource guide for you on our website.

You can access many library services online.

The Library at Home page outlines all the e-services available with your Cambridge Public Library card, allowing you access to thousands of e-books, audiobooks, databases, movies, music, e-magazines, and more. In exciting news, the genealogical database source, Ancestry.com, has temporarily been enabled for home access. Two new services, TumbleBookLibrary and TumbleMath, have just been added with resources for children. Cambridge residents can also enjoy a variety of online trainings via Lynda.com. A special thanks to the Cambridge Public Library Foundation and Friends of the Cambridge Public Library for giving extra resource and service support during this time.

Library staff are still here to help.

Contact us through our webform with your suggestions, comments and questions during this closure. We will do our best to respond within two business days.

We can connect you to helpful resources.

Library staff have been busy populating the Resources Beyond Your Library page, which has sections for information on COVID-19, as well as resources categorized into Reading and Listening, Looking and Learning, and Creating and Making sections. There are some excellent resource suggestions for everyone, but especially for parents who might be looking for new ways to occupy their kids at home.

There is also a new virtual Self-Care Center page, which contains resources for physical activity, meditation/mindfulness, opportunities to help others— and some resources just to make you smile.

There is still more to come...

Library staff will continue to update the resource guide over the coming days and weeks, so please check in periodically to see what’s new.
We’re offering our first Virtual Family Story Time on Zoom this Friday, April 10, at 11 a.m. We are exploring how to offer more virtual events in the near future.

Please continue to follow proper handwashing procedures and maintain appropriate social distancing to slow the spread of COVID-19 in our community.
We hope to be able to welcome all of you back to our beloved Cambridge Public Library facilities soon.

In closing, I thought it would be apropos to close with uplifting words by Cambridge writer Hannah Mahoney, whose poem is affixed to a staircase at the Main Library in celebration of National Poetry month in partnership with the Cambridge Arts Council and the Department of Public Works.

day moon
among cirrus clouds...
so much is still possible

All the best,

Dr. Maria McCauley
Director, Cambridge Public Library
