New library at night

Dear Patrons,

This week, I invite you to explore another great set of programs in The Hive, enjoy a Summer Reading Crafternoon, listen to the Park Sounds with Violinviiv, and perform Yoga on the Lawn!

Summer Reading: Crafternoon with Alex Makes Art (Virtual)

Allow Alex Makes Art to bring some color into your week on Monday, August 16, at 4 p.m.! We will be using everyday household items to create projects that can be modified for children of all ages. Registration is required.

Virtual ESOL Classes

Virtual English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes occur on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Introductory ESOL takes place at 11 a.m., beginner ESOL at 1 p.m., and intermediate ESOL at 3 p.m. Registration is required for each class. Please see the Library’s online events calendar for more details.

Hive Safety Training and Glowforge 101
Tuesday, August 17, at 1:30 p.m.
Thursday, August 19, at 1:30 p.m.

In this hour-and-a-half workshop, you will learn about our makerspace, how to use our resources, and how to keep safe in The Hive. You will also create your Hive badge ID using our Glowforge laser cutter and learn how to cut and engrave your own creations using this device. Registration is required.

All makers must sign The Hive User Agreement and Waivers to participate.

Thursday, August 19, at 3:30 p.m.

Learn how to properly select materials for your project, optimize artwork and file format, use the camera for focusing and scanning, and maintain the machine. Completion of this workshop earns you a badge for the Glowforge laser cutter. As a badged maker, you can reserve the Glowforge Pro to use during designated times You must complete Hive Safety Training & Glowforge 101 before using this program. Registration is required.

Outdoor Story Time

On Tuesday, August 17, at 4 p.m., we invite children and their grown-ups to join us for 20-25 minutes of songs, stories, and rhymes. This program will be held in Joan Lorentz Park on the lawn outside the Main Library. In the event of rain, it will move indoors.

XR Lab 101

Extended reality (XR) opens the door to worlds and experiences outside the everyday through virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality equipment. On Wednesday, August 18, at 3 p.m., test drive our Microsoft HoloLens augmented reality glasses, Structure Sensor 3D scanner, Merge headsets, and more. You must complete Hive Safety Training & Glowforge 101 before using this program. Registration is required.

Park Sounds with Violinviiv

On Wednesday, August 18, at 6 p.m., enjoy a special evening of music with the beloved contemporary electric violinist Violinviiv! Come with your picnic and your loved ones to Joan Lorentz Park, outside the Main Library. Registration is not required.

Tinkercad 101: Customized Phone Stand

Are you interested in making your own phone stand? On Wednesday, August 18, at 6 p.m., learn the fundamentals of Tinkercad to design and edit objects for 3D printing. You'll also learn how to use our 3D printers. Tinkercad is a free, web-based application. Basic computer skills are necessary for this course. Computing devices are available for reservation via Takeout Technology. Registration is required.

3D Printing 101

On Wednesday, August 18, at 7:30 p.m., learn how to use our Sindoh 3D printers and create a design for your first 3D print in The Hive. You must complete Hive Safety Training & Glowforge 101 before registering for this workshop. This workshop includes a design tutorial in Tinkercad. Create a Tinkercad account at www.tinkercad.com before arriving. Parents may need to assist users under the age of 18 to create an account. Registration is required.

Summer Reading: Puzzle Your Brain (Valente)

On Thursday, August 19, at 2 p.m., use your skills as a detective to have fun solving mini-mysteries and riddles! Recommended for children aged 8 and up and their caregivers. This program will take place outdoors at the Valente Branch Library, 826 Cambridge St. In the event of rain, it will move indoors.

Sing-Along

Children and their grownups, please join us in Joan Lorentz Park, outside the Main Library, on Friday, August 20, at 11 a.m., for 20-25 minutes of singing and dancing! Plan to sing and move around! Caregivers are asked to participate with their children. In the event of rain, this program will be canceled.

Zing Laser Cutting 101

On Friday, August 20, at 1 p.m., learn how to use our Epilog Zing—an industry-standard laser cutting machine—and Inkscape graphics software to design and laser cut a cardboard virtual reality headset to explore virtual worlds. Complete this workshop to earn a badge for the Zing laser cutter. With a badge, you can reserve the Epilog Zing to use on our equipment booking page at designated times. Note: You must participate in the separate Glowforge 201 workshop in order to operate our Glowforge Pro laser cutter. You must complete Hive Safety Training & Glowforge 101 before participating in this program. Registration is required.

Button Making

On Friday, August 20, at 3 p.m., learn how to use our special equipment and start designing and assembling your own buttons, magnets, and keychains. You must complete Hive Safety Training & Glowforge 101 before using this program. Registration is required.

Yoga on the Lawn with Cap Aguilar

On Saturday, August 21, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., we will learn yogic practices (movement and breathing techniques) to take with you  into your daily life. Explore movement, mindfulness, and breathing practices for 75 minutes, followed by 15 minutes for reflective journaling and/or conversation. Registration is required.

Studio Recording 101

Are you interested in podcasting, audio production, or video production? The Hive has two state-of-the-art recording studios! Join this workshop on Saturday, August 21, at 11:30 a.m., to become familiar with the equipment and software in these tools. You must complete Hive Safety Training & Glowforge 101 before participating in this program. Registration is required.
