New library at night

Dear Patrons, 

I hope you are enjoying a final week of the summer before the new school year begins!

Labor Day Holiday 

Please note that all Library locations will be closed on Monday, September 6, in celebration of Labor Day.  

Virtual ESOL Classes (Virtual) 

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes occur virtually on Tuesdays and Thursdays. However, there will be no classes this Thursday. Introductory ESOL takes place at 11 a.m., beginner ESOL at 1 p.m., and intermediate ESOL at 3 p.m. Registration is required for each class. Please see the Library’s online events calendar for more details. 

Studio Recording 101 (Main) 

Are you interested in podcasting, audio production, or video production? The Hive has two state-of-the-art recording studios! Join this workshop on Thursday, September 9, at 6 p.m. to become familiar with the basics of the equipment and software. Registration is required.  

You must complete Hive Safety Training & Glowforge 101 before participating in this program. 

XR Lab 101 (Main) 

Extended reality (XR) opens the door to worlds and experiences outside the everyday through virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality equipment. On Friday, September 10, at 3:30 p.m., you can test drive our Microsoft HoloLens augmented reality glasses, Structure Sensor 3D scanner, Merge headsets, and more. Registration is required

You must complete Hive Safety Training & Glowforge 101 before registering for this workshop. 

Hive Safety Training & Glowforge 101 (Main) 

In this hour-and-a-half workshop on Saturday, September 11, at 11:30 a.m., you will learn about our makerspace, how to use our resources, and how to keep safe in The Hive. You will also create your Hive badge ID using our Glowforge laser cutter and learn how to cut and engrave your own creations using this device. Registration is required.  

All makers must sign The Hive User Agreement and Waivers to participate. 

Hive Equipment and Studio Reservations (Main) 
Tuesday, September 7, 1:30-5 p.m. 
Wednesday, September 8, 1:30-5 p.m. 
Saturday, September 11, 1-3 p.m. 

Anyone who has completed Hive training and is badged to use equipment or studio(s) can reserve Hive equipment or studio spaces. Staff will assist participants as they are able. Make reservations

TREE MUSIC: Songs In the Key of C++ with Skooby Laposky and Charles Copley (Main) 

On Saturday, September 11, from 2 to 4 p.m., the musicians Skooby Laposky and Charles Copley will perform as part of the Hidden Life Radio project. Using biodata from the beloved weeping willow tree in Joan Lorentz Park, outside the Main Library, they will create rich polyphonic electronic music, with Copley improvising on acoustic guitar as the flora's melodies unfold in real time. Laposky and Copley regularly record together as Palm Reading for the music label Myndstream. Registration is not required.
