Library Celebrates Juneteenth

The Cambridge Public Library is hosting a system-wide celebration of Juneteenth. The main event, which will take place outdoors on Saturday, June 18, from 12-2 p.m., at the Central Square Branch, 45 Pearl Street, Cambridge, includes a presentation by storyteller Valerie Stephens, and a performance by the Albino Mbie Band, known for its Afro-pop and Moz-Jazz sounds. The program also includes fun activities for all ages. The Comics in Color Collective will be creating sidewalk chalk murals at the Main Library and all Branch locations throughout the week of June 12, and refreshments will be served at Library Juneteenth programs.
Cambridge Mayor Sumbul Siddiqui will be a guest reader at the Juneteenth Story Time at the Central Square Branch on Thursday, June 16 at 10:30 a.m. Programs in celebration of Juneteenth are cosponsored by the City Manager's Office and the Mayor's Office.
The O’Neill and Boudreau Branches will be hosting a special Story Time Journey to Juneteenth - and Beyond with storyteller Valerie Tutson. Tutson tells the story of the day news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached Galveston, TX, through the eyes of Ma’lizzy, a fictional character who paints a captivating picture of life prior to and after emancipation. Tutson will be at the O’Neill Branch on Tuesday, June 21, from 3:30-4:15 p.m., and at the Boudreau Branch on Tuesday, June 21, from 6:30-7:15 p.m.

• Tuesday, June 21, 4 p.m. | Valente Branch, 826 Cambridge Street, Cambridge
Juneteenth honors June 19, 1865, the day that the news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached Galveston, Texas, marking the end to slavery in the United States. Learn more about Juneteenth.
