In March 2018, Reuters reported that the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi had appointed a committee of experts to prove that today’s Hindus are directly descended from the land’s first inhabitants many thousands of years ago, strengthening the case that ancient Hindu scriptures are fact not myth. This development is of grave concern to many in India’s Muslim community who fear that this will exacerbate the marginalization of India’s over 200 million Muslims.
