David Art is Professor of Political Science at Tufts University. He is the author of The Politics of the Nazi Past in Germany and Austria (Cambridge University Press, 2006) and of Inside the Radical Right: The Development of Anti-Immigrant Parties in Western Europe (Cambridge University Press, 2011). He is currently completing a book manuscript titled The Resilience of the Old Regime: The Rise of Mass Politics in Europe, 1848-1914. Art was the co-convenor of the European Consortium for Political Research’s Standing Group on Extremism and Democracy. His articles have been published in such journals as Comparative Politics, German Politics and Society, Party Politics, Political Science Quarterly, Social Science Quarterly, and West European Politics, and his research has been supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Center for European Studies at Harvard University, and the Max Weber Program at the European University Institute. His research interests include the origins and consequences of political extremism, the production and influence of historical memory, the development of authoritarian regimes, and policing in advanced industrial societies.
