Office of Workforce Development; City-wide Youth Employment Office Minutes of Meeting, Tuesday, October 29,1996

In attendance: Michelle Farnum, Nicole Rodriguez, Rondel Lashley, Donna Masteroianni, Andrea Levy, with Ted Burton of Library 21

To provide access to all the people of Cambridge and to insure that we manage our resources well, Library 21 is gathering information from as many groups as possible about what the people want.

What would you like in the library?

A. Community Activity Center

  • Library could coordinate a rotating sequence of guest speakers
  • Community room with access to overhead projector
  • Seminars and rooms
  • Meeting rooms
  • Computer Center (to do resume, etc.) properly labeled with instruction
  • Speakers- poets, readings (as marketing effort)
  • Activity at library for "Big/ little sister" program
  • Chess clubs
  • Cooking classes

B. Community Information Center

  • City services resource room on day care, employment center, fuel, etc.
  • Book listings/ mailing or posting
  • Resource room/area with printed materials on free, or low-cost social services available in the community

C. Formal Education Support Center

  • Private study rooms/booths for tutors to meet with students

D. Independent Learning Center

  • Boston Public Library's "Higher Education Center"
  • Seminars: job search resources, internet addresses, community-based service
  • Seminars: resume writing- how to, formats ( chronological vs. skill-based)
  • Seminars: career planning
  • Seminars: degree requirements and salary level of different jobs
