The Cambridge Council on Aging (COA) works to promote and safeguard the health and independence of Cambridge seniors over the age of 60 by helping arrange many necessary services and providing meaningful social and recreational opportunities. Some of the free, ongoing programs offered by the COA that support seniors and their loved ones in different ways include the Caregiver Support Group, the Bereavement Support Group, and a new monthly LGBT+ social event. All groups or events will be held at the Cambridge Senior Center, 806 Massachusetts Avenue.

The Caregiver Support Group is open to anyone who is providing care for a loved one. This group will meet on the third Monday of each month. The next meeting will be held Monday, Sept. 16, from 1-2 p.m. For more information, contact Maryellen McEleney, mmceleney@cambridgema.gov, or Vincent McCarthy, 617-349-6220 or vmccarthy@cambridgema.gov.

The Bereavement Support Group offers a space for people experiencing grief from the death of a loved one. Founded on self-care, listening and support, the group offers a safe place to reflect on losses, witnessing the end of a loved one’s life, and surviving without them. The group will reflect on and share experiences of grief and loss and explore simple meditations, poetry, and rituals to begin healing. The group will meet on the 3rd Wednesday of each month. The next meeting is Wednesday, Sept. 18, from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. All are welcome. Please call the facilitator, Betsy Simmons, Holistic Health Educator & Interfaith Minister, at 617-966-9066 prior to attending the first meeting.

The Council on Aging has started a new LGBT+ social event for individuals age 60 and older that will be held on the 4th Monday of each month. The next event is Monday, Sept. 23, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required for this event. For more information, or to register, contact Vincent McCarthy at 617-349-6220 or vmccarthy@cambridgema.gov.
