Exterior Insulation Zoning Amendment Proposal

Exterior insulation on house

The Net Zero Action Plan, adopted in 2015 by the City Council, lays out strategies for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from buildings in order to meet the City’s climate commitments. Adding insulation to the exterior of a building is a cost-effective and non-disruptive way to reduce your energy use, save money, and lower GHG emissions. Current zoning in Cambridge allows for the addition of exterior insulation in specific circumstances. However, this in many instances requires a zoning variance, which can be costly and time-consuming. The proposed amendment would increase zoning flexibility to make it easier for property owners to install exterior insulation without needing a variance. For the full proposal, click here.

An information session will be held on Thursday, October 17th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Citywide Senior Center, 806 Massachusetts Ave. All are invited to attend to learn more about the proposal. City staff will explain the background and details of this zoning proposal and answer questions from the public.
