City Wants Your Feedback on River Street Reconstruction Carl Barron Plaza Design Concept

The City of Cambridge invites the public to tell us their thoughts about proposed Carl Barron Plaza design concepts. The City is redesigning and reconstructing the plaza at the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and River Street in front of Cambridge Savings Bank and Amazon storefronts in the Holmes Building. This design and construction is being done together with the River Street Reconstruction project. The vision is for Carl Barron Plaza to be a central public plaza and space for all users. The City created the plaza design concepts over the past two years using public feedback from three public meetings, outreach to stakeholders, online surveys and comment maps, and through a stakeholder working group.

With materials posted on a project webpage, including a video presentation and comment form, the public can:

  • View the Carl Barron Plaza design concept, the large pedestrian plaza at the heart of Central Square

  • Provide comments and questions about the design concept

The public’s comments will help the project team refine the plaza concept designs. City staff expect to present final designs in early fall 2021 at a public meeting and begin construction in late 2021. Click here to watch the project video presentation.

The rendering shows the plaza at Massachusetts Avenue and River Street, facing the Holmes Building store fronts for Cambridge Savings Bank and Amazon. A ribbon-like metal sculptural structure is the center-piece of a renewed public space at Carl Barron Plaza. Additional features include more street tree plantings, new pavement surfaces, and spaces to program public events.
