Dear Patrons,

Happy Women’s History Month! To commemorate it, we host many discussions about books by female authors and guest speakers. As we explore the intersectionality of race and gender, I invite you to register for this March 9 program, Ruby Hamad and Saher Selod in a discussion about Hamad’s: White Tears/Brown Scars: How White Feminism Betrays Women of Color. Ruby Hamad’s Guardian article, “How White Women Use Strategic Tears to Silence Women of Color,” became a global flashpoint for discussions of white feminism and racism and inspired her debut book, White Tears/Brown Scars.

The Cultural Phenomenon of Home DNA Testing

On Monday, March 1, at 6:30 p.m., join the award-winning journalist Libby Copeland to explore the extraordinary cultural phenomenon of home DNA testing. With more than 35 million people having been tested, a tipping point has been reached. Virtually all Americans are affected whether they have been tested or not, and millions have been affected by significant revelations in their immediate families. The presentation will draw on Copeland’s years of research for her new book, The Lost Family: How DNA Is Upending Who We Are (Abrams, 2020). Registration is required.

Virtual ESOL Classes

Virtual English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes occur on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Introductory ESOL takes place at 11 a.m., beginner ESOL at 1 p.m., and intermediate ESOL at 3 p.m. Registration is required for each class. Please see the Library’s online events calendar for more details.

Turn Your Drawing into 3D Charms

On Tuesday, March 2, at 3:30 p.m., learn some of the fundamentals of Google Drawing and Tinkercad to draw or design a charm or token and transform it into a three-dimensional object. Participants may share a completed design file to be made into a 3D printed charm or token in The Hive and arrange to collect them via Contactless Holds Pickup. Computer proficiency is necessary for this course. Registration is required.

Design Support at The Hive

Have you attended one of our virtual design workshops or developed a project idea on your own that you would like to bring to life with some of the tools in The Hive? Virtually "drop in" to The Hive on Wednesday, March 3, at 3:30 p.m. for help using design tools such as Google Drawings, Tinkercad, and Inkscape to develop your project.

Basic computer skills are necessary for this program. Registration is required.

Tween/Teen Virtual Hangout

Tweens, teens, and their adults are invited to drop in on Wednesday, March 3, at 4 p.m. Say hello to your librarians, get book recommendations and research assistance, learn about the Library's virtual offerings, and bring your suggestions! Registration is required.

Wellness for Seniors: Virtual Zumba Gold

On Thursday, March 4, at 11 a.m., put on your dancing shoes to improve your flexibility and balance, strengthen your muscles, and have a great time! The certified Zumba Gold instructor Emily B. will lead you through 45 minutes of low-impact and easy choreography in your own home through Zoom. The Zoom link will be sent to registrants one hour before the program starts. Registration is required.

Cambridge by Map

How old is the Cambridge Public Library? What was Cambridge like in the late 19th and early 20th centuries? How has the city changed, and how has it stayed the same? On Thursday, March 4, at noon, join the Leventhal Map Center on a virtual walk through historic Cambridge and discover how to learn about the history of your own house and neighborhood! Registration is required.

We invite children and their grownups to visit us from home for 20-25 minutes of engaging stories. Plan to join in, sing along, and move around!

Google Drawing 101: Personalized Coaster Set

On Thursday, March 4, at 6:30 p.m., learn the fundamentals of Google Drawing to design and edit images for a set of four distinctive coasters. You'll also be introduced to our laser cutting machines. Participants may share a completed design file to be made into coasters in The Hive and collect them via Contactless Holds Pickup. Basic computer skills are necessary for this course. Registration is required.

Advanced Creative Drama with Little Spark Theater

Join us for an exploration of theater through silly, fun, zany, wacky, downright bananas imaginative play on Friday, March 5! This three-week series, recommended for kids ages 6-8, will take place on Fridays at 4 p.m. until March 19.  We focus on senses, feelings, and movement through structured dramatic play to build confidence, social awareness, empathy, and problem-solving skills. Registration is required. Registering for one will sign you up for all sessions.
