Director's Update, October 10, 2021

New library at night

Dear Patrons,

This will be a short week due to the Indigenous Peoples’ Day holiday, but there is still lots to do at the Cambridge Public Library! Please join us virtually for a special program this Wednesday, October 13, Disrupting Colonial Narratives in Public Spaces with Erin Genia, co-sponsored by the offices of Mayor Sumbul Siddiqui and City Manager Louis A. DePasquale.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day

All CPL locations will be closed on Monday, October 11, in celebration of Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Outdoor Programming for Kids

Weekly outdoor programs for young children will be offered (weather permitting) at our Central Square, Main, O’Connell, O’Neill and Valente locations:

  • Outdoor Baby Lapsit: Just for you and your baby! Enjoy time together with other parents, caregivers, and babies to play and develop language and motor skills.
  • Outdoor Sing Along: All ages are invited to sing and dance!
  • Outdoor Story Time: All ages are invited to join us for a half hour of stories!

Please see our events calendar for all outdoor youth program details. Registration is not required.

ESOL Classes (Central Square/Virtual)

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes occur virtually on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Beginner ESOL takes place at 1 p.m. and Intermediate ESOL at 3 p.m.

Intermediate classes will also be offered in person at the Central Square Branch on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11 a.m., and Intro ESOL will be offered on Wednesdays and Fridays at 10:30 a.m.

Registration is required for each class.

3D Printing 101 (Main)

Tuesday, October 12, at 1 p.m.
Wednesday, October 13, at 7:30 p.m.

Learn how to use our Sindoh 3D printers and create a design for your first 3D print in The Hive. This workshop includes a design tutorial in Tinkercad. Create a Tinkercad account at www.tinkercad.com before arriving. Parents may need to assist users under the age of 18 to create an account. Registration is required.

You must complete Hive Safety Training & Glowforge 101 before registering for this workshop.

XR Lab 101 (Main)

Tuesday, October 12, at 4 p.m.
Wednesday, October 13, at 5:30 p.m.

Extended reality (XR) opens the door to worlds and experiences outside the everyday through virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality equipment. In this workshop, test drive our Microsoft HoloLens augmented reality glasses, Structure Sensor 3D scanner, Merge headsets, and more. Registration is required.

You must complete Hive Safety Training & Glowforge 101 before registering for this workshop.

Résumé and Job Application Support (Central Square)

Looking for assistance creating a résumé or looking for jobs? Join us on Wednesday, October 13, from 1 - 3 p.m., at the Central Square Branch (45 Pearl St.) for help with résumés, job hunting, and online applications. No registration is required.

Hive Safety Training & Glowforge 101 (Main)

Wednesday, October 13, at 4 p.m.
Saturday, October 16, at 11 a.m.

In this workshop, you will learn about our makerspace, how to use our resources, and how to keep safe in The Hive. You will also create your Hive badge ID using our Glowforge laser cutter and learn how to cut and engrave your own creations using this device. Registration is required.

All makers must sign The Hive User Agreement and Waivers to participate.

Disrupting Colonial Narratives in Public Spaces with Erin Genia (Virtual)

On Wednesday October 13, at 6 p.m., celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day with Erin Genia, Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate/Odawa, a multidisciplinary artist, educator and community organizer specializing in Native American and Indigenous arts and culture. Genia’s work is focused on amplifying the powerful presence of Indigenous peoples in the arts, sciences and public realm to invoke an evolution of thought and practice that is aligned with the cycles of the natural world and the potential of humanity. Registration is required.

Studio Recording 101 (Main)

Are you interested in podcasting, audio production, or video production? The Hive has two state-of-the-art recording studios! On Thursday, October 14, at 6 p.m., join this workshop to become familiar with the basics of the equipment and software. Registration is required.

You must complete Hive Safety Training & Glowforge 101 before participating in this program.

Hive Equipment and Studio Reservations (Main)
Thursday, October 14, at 7 p.m.
Friday, October 15, at 2:30 p.m.
Saturday, October 16, at 12:30 p.m.

Anyone who has completed Hive training and is badged to use equipment or studio(s) can reserve Hive equipment or studio spaces. Staff will assist participants as they are able. Make reservations. Learn more about becoming a badged maker.

Button Making (Main)

On Friday, October 15, at 1 p.m., learn how to use our button-making-equipment and start designing and assembling your own buttons, magnets and keychains. Registration is required.
