NOTICE REGARDING PROPOSED NEW HACKNEY RULES:

Posted 2/17/17

Below are two links relating to Hackney Rules and Regulations. The first link is to the current Hackney Rules and Regulations, the second is the Board’s first draft of proposed new Hackney Rules and Regulations.

We have also provided a third link which summarizes requirements pursuant to City Ordinance. The fact that these requirements are not part of the proposed rule book does not meant that they do not apply. In addition, the Board eliminated any rule that is a policy or described the internal processes of the office as those will be contained in notices to the public not as rules.

The major rules proposed to be eliminated by the Board are: Hackney School, requirements of drivers’ clothing, types and age of vehicles, mechanical inspections (beyond the State’s required inspection), requirement for partitions, and ride along requirement. The major addition to the proposed rules: allowance of electronic/soft meters, more complete due process for the revocation of licenses/medallions. The Board’s goal is to provide flexibility to the industry so that it can make any changes it deems necessary to survive while at the same time keeping all requirements that ensure public safety.

Members of the public may submit written comments with regard to the proposed new rules to the Board by email at hackney@cambridgema.gov or fax to 617-349-6148.

The Board will also take public and written comment as to the proposed new rules on March 8, 2017, at 10:00 a.m., in the Carmelia M. Vicente Conference Room of the Michael J. Lombardi Building, 831 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge. Public comment will be taken from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Additional hearings may be scheduled and future amended drafts may be published for additional comment.
