Mayor Siddiqui Celebrates Ramadan by Providing Cambridge Families with Iftar Meals

Cambridge Mayor Sumbul Siddiqui is continuing the tradition of celebrating Ramadan during COVID-19 by providing nearly 700 Iftar meals to hundreds of Cambridge families.

Ramadan will be held from April 12th through May 12, 2021, and those observing the holiday celebrate the Holy Month by fasting -- not eating or drinking any food or water from dawn to dusk each day. At sundown, Muslims celebrate with the meal known as the Iftar, which means "breaking the fast," usually shared with family and friends. In prior years, the Cambridge community has come to City Hall and enjoyed Iftar meals at the Senior Center.

"For the second year in a row, Ramadan will look different for our community," said Mayor Siddiqui. "Though we can't gather with one another as we normally do, it is important for us to continue the tradition of breaking fast in a safe way."

This is the second year Mayor Siddiqui has provided Iftar meals during her term. Last year, 300 meals were provided from local Cambridge restaurants, Darul Kebab and Brookline Lunch. This year, Mayor Siddiqui will partner with India Pavilion and Darul Kebab to provide meals to Cambridge residents from May 5th to May 9th, 2021.
