Webster Ave Separated Bike Lane Installation

On Tuesday, November 17, the Traffic, Parking, and Transportation Department will install separated bike lanes on Webster Ave between the Somerville City Line and Cambridge St. All work is weather dependent. These lanes will fill an existing gap in bike facilities and are consistent with the draft 2020 Cambridge Bicycle Network Vision. The plan is being implemented following the recent repaving of this section of Webster Ave and has been discussed with businesses and community members who abut the project area.

As part of this work, the existing parking along the west side of the street will be removed. The parking spaces that were on the east side of the street before the construction project at 305 Webster Ave began will not be restored. Additional parking will be provided along the west side of Columbia St north of Webster Ave.

The existing southbound left turn lane at the Cambridge St intersection will be eliminated. Traffic analyses indicate that this change should not have a significant impact on people who are driving on the street. Once the installation is complete, the roadway will have one general travel lane and a bike lane in each direction. Painted buffer areas with flex posts will provide separation between the general travel lanes and the bike lanes.
