It's Worth It, Keep Learning: Former Graduate of the Cambridge Community Learning Center (CLC) Mentors New Graduates

On Wednesday, June 18, 102 adults graduated from the Cambridge Community Learning Center (CLC). Each person graduating had their own reasons for coming to the CLC to learn.

Three years ago, Lourdy was one of the CLC graduates who proudly walked across the graduation stage after completing the Bridge to College Program. Lourdy began his journey at the CLC taking English classes. “Coming to a new country and trying to learn English as an adult was really hard,” he reflects. “Sometimes I could not understand why I was going to school. But now I can see it was worth it."

Today, Lourdy is one class away from earning an Information Technology (IT) Certification from Bunker Hill Community College. “My first year going to college was tough,” he admits. “Even though I have an IT background, navigating the college’s systems was really confusing. Because it was difficult for me, I wanted to help other CLC graduates figure things out.”

Lourdy contacted his Bridge to College math teacher Margaret, who had been his mentor, and offered to support new graduates. Now, Lourdy mentors two former CLC students. “I check in with my students each week via email," explains. "I love mentoring and helping people.”

In addition to studying, Lourdy works full-time as an IT professional, repairing Automated Teller Machines (ATMs). He is also a dedicated father. “I like getting hands-on experience and having a flexible job,” he says. “I have a 12-year-old daughter, and I want to be able spend time with her.”

After earning his associate's degree, Lourdy plans to keep going. He hopes to pursue a bachelor’s and eventually, a master's degree.

“My advice for the class of 2025 is this: you may not see it now when you are studying, but in the future, you will know that it was worth it. Keep going and keep learning. Remember that the CLC will always be there for you.”
