Analysis of the crime totals for the first month of 2023 indicates that violent crimes recorded an increase to start the year when compared with last year with two additional crimes reported. Similarly, property crimes rose 18% with 26 additional crimes reported when compared with the first month of 2022. The 267% increase in shopliftings and the 70% rise in bicycle larcenies when compared with January of 2022 were the key trend indicators observed so far in 2023 that drove the upward curve in the crime index for January.
