Analysis of the crime totals for the first five months of 2023 indicates that violent crimes recorded a 29% increase to start the year when compared with last year. Similarly, property crimes rose 25% with 198 additional crimes reported when compared with the first five months of 2022. A 96% increase in shoplifting, 74% increase in bicycle larcenies, and 41% rise in aggravated assaults when compared with 2022 are the key trend indicators observed so far in 2023 that have driven the increase in the crime index for May.
