The City awarded a contract for the reconstruction of a number of streets throughout Cambridge to A. R. Belli of Newton, which includes roadway paving, new sidewalks, new curb ramps and pedestrian enhancements on Elm Street (between Hampshire Street and Broadway) and Market Street (between Elm and Clark streets), Gardner Rd, and Notre Dame Ave.

Key Elements of the Elm Street design:
In early 2008, staff of the Community Development Department met with members of the Elm Street community to discuss traffic calming design elements. Out of the meetings came a plan of improvements to enhance pedestrian safety and reduce the speeds of vehicles in the vicinity of the Cambridgeport School. Raised crosswalk across Elm Street in front of the Cambridgeport School at existing crosswalk Curb extension at the intersection of Elm and Market Street

If you have any questions on the traffic calming design, please contact Juan Avendano, Traffic Calming Project Manager, at 617- 349-4655 or javendano@cambridgema.gov.

Key Elements of the Market Street design:
As part of the City’s 5 Year Sidewalk and Street Plan http://www.cambridgema.gov/TheWorks/news/5YearPlan.pdf, Market Street between Elm Street and Columbia Street was identified as a priority location, due to the deteriorated condition of the street and sidewalk, as well as its proximity to the school. As a result of the City receiving American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Community Development Block Grant (Stimulus) funding, it has been possible to increase the scope of work to include Market Street between Elm and Clark streets. Curb extensions to enhance pedestrian access Elm and Windsor streets Raised crosswalk and curb extensions on Clark Street to enhance pedestrian access
