This project has been completed. No further updates to this project page will be made.

September 23, 2015

The City’s contractor, Marchese Construction, will be paving a section of Massachusetts Avenue from Garfield Street to Forest Street on Friday, September 25.  Work hours will be from 7 PM Friday evening until 8 AM Saturday morning.

This will be the final significant phase of construction.  Typically we would pave during the daytime, however, this paving has to be scheduled at night due to the volume of traffic on Mass Ave and the need for the MBTA to shut down the overhead catenary wires associated with the electric buses.

What to Expect During Roadway Paving:

  • Work hours will be 7 PM to 8 AM
  • Vehicle access in and out of properties will be limited during work hours. Please plan vehicle and parking trips accordingly.
  • “No Parking” signs will be posted 24 hours in advance of the work.  Please be sure to check dates/times. PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE WILL BE NO PARKING ON EITHER SIDE OF MASS AVE FROM WENDELL STREET TO FOREST STREET AS NEEDED FOR MAINTAINING TRAFFIC FLOW.
  • No right turn from Wendell Street onto Mass Ave will be allowed.
  • Side streets will be detoured throughout the evening.
  • Emergency vehicles will have access at all times.

MASSACHUSETTS AVENUE ROADWAY MILLING & PAVING NOTICE

Dear Neighbor,

The City’s contractor, Marchese Construction, will be grinding and paving sections of Mass Ave in the next few weeks. This will be the final significant phase of construction. Typically we would pave during the daytime, however, this paving has to be scheduled at night due to the volume of traffic on Mass Ave and the need for the MBTA to shut down the overhead catenary wires associated with the electric buses. Vehicle traffic will be maintained on Mass Ave, but there will be lane restrictions in place. Side streets will be detoured throughout the evening.

Check out the Waze app to help navigate around construction.  Waze is a mobile app and a website (waze.com)  that gathers real time traffic data from users and government partners to identify the best traffic routing for a specific trip

Access to driveways and side streets will be restricted during paving operations, so please plan accordingly.

Please refer to the documents tab for updates on the Massachusetts Ave. reconstruction schedule.

In 2011, the City of Cambridge Community Development Department began a study to explore ways to improve the character of Mass Avenue from Cambridge Common to Porter Square, with the goal of developing recommendations for improvements that address streetscape improvements, and enhancement of the retail environment. Neither street reconstruction nor major infrastructure work is anticipated on Massachusetts Avenue in this location, therefore changes to the physical layout of the street including the median and curb lines are not a part of this process. The study process included a series of public meetings which began in Spring 2011.

The stretch of sidewalk from Shepard St to Garfield St, referred to as the “Demonstration Block” will include concrete and brick sidewalk paving, enhanced tree pits, street furniture and other features established in the Lower Massachusetts Ave Master Plan.
