Project Schedule

Sidewalk Reconstruction - June 2015 thru August 2015

Final Roadway Paving - September 2015

Consistent with what has been presented in the City’s Five Year Sidewalk and Roadway Reconstruction Program, Second Street, between Gore Street and Charles Street, was identified as an area that was in need of repairs and upgrades. The DPW engineering division reviews evaluations of the roadway and sidewalk conditions of all City streets and sidewalks and updates the Five Year Plan on an annual basis. When reconstructing roadways and sidewalks, many City Departments (DPW, Community Development, Traffic and Parking Dept.) work together to achieve the best possible product for all users of the roadway and sidewalks.

In conjunction with the resurfacing of the roadway the City is required to establish crossings and intersections that meet all current accessibility guidelines. Through a Community Process and an evaluation of the conditions of each intersection and block of sidewalk, the scope of the work and design are established.

Community Process and Schedule
In April 2012 and June 2012, the City of Cambridge held community meetings with area residents to discuss the project. These meetings included productive conversations on traffic calming measures that could be used to create a safer atmosphere for the neighborhood. The project design was generated through these community meetings, and we are appreciative of the input that we received. We have many eyes and ears on the ground, but the best feedback we receive are from the folks who walk the sidewalks and drive on the roadway on a daily basis.

Through Community input and an evaluation of the condition of the existing sidewalks, the scope of the work was developed. Please see below a list of the work that will be completed as part of the current contract.

The Second Street work was initially intended to commence in 2014 but was delayed to allow for some subsurface utility work to be accommodated in advance of the surface of the road being repaved. Utility work by the Cambridge Water Department and Eversource Gas has been or will be completed in advance of the roadway being repaved. By allowing the subsurface work to be completed the City hopes to ensure that no non-emergency utility work will require cutting into the newly paved Street.

Scope of Work
As was indicated above, the Second Street work includes the resurfacing of the roadway from Charles Street to Gore Street, accessibility improvements at crossings and intersections and traffic calming elements as presented during the Community Process. In addition, areas of sidewalk that are in poor condition, have been impacted by utility work or create accessibility issues also will be reconstructed.

Specifically the Second Street work includes:
• Reconstruction of the roadway (Charles Street to Gore Street)
• Sidewalk work includes:
o corners and intersections creating accessible crossings at intersections at
 Charles Street
 Hurley Street
 Spring Street
 Thorndike Street
 Otis Street
o west (Odd) side block between Charles Street and Hurley Street
o area on Second Street directly across from Otis Street
o east side block between Thorndike and Otis (to be disturbed by gas work)
o all areas between Cambridge Street and Gore Street
• Raised intersection at Second Street and Charles Street
• Raised sidestreet crosswalks on:
o Thorndike Street at Second Street (east and west side)
o Otis Street at Second Street
