Huron Ave Reconstruction Project - Final roadway paving scheduled to begin Monday, October 26th
The City’s contractor, Newport Construction, will be prepping and paving Huron Ave the week of Monday, October 26th.
This work is expected to take approximately one week to complete, weather permitting. If conditions are wet on the day of scheduled paving, work will be delayed until the next day. Vehicle access in and out of properties will be restricted during work hours while crews perform the paving. Please plan vehicle trips accordingly.
Any additional restoration items related to the project, including back of sidewalk work and pavement markings, will be completed by the contractor in the coming weeks before the end of construction.

Huron Ave Reconstruction Project Update
The City's contractor, Newport Construction, will begin the installation of raised crosswalks the week of October 5th. These installations will take approximately two weeks.
During the next two weeks, crews will also be completing concrete sidewalk panels at the intersections of Garden St. and Raymond St.

Notice: City Construction Projects Update
On March 18th, Cambridge issued a Temporary Emergency Construction Moratorium to limit construction in the City to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Last week, the City issued an Amended Temporary Emergency Construction Order to allow construction to restart in a phased approach in the coming weeks.
What does this mean for construction in my neighborhood?
Beginning this week, you may start to see some construction activity related to site safety preparations, including installation of hand wash stations and other site modifications related to COVID-19 safety precautions. Beginning June 1st, you may start to see increased activity on your street related to the re-starting of construction. We will be in touch via additional notices with a schedule and information specific to the project on your street.
Residents should be aware that No Parking signs will start to appear in relation to construction activity. Contractors will make every effort to provide 48-hours’ notice, but please check the street frequently.

COVID-19 Control Plan for Construction:
In addition to the stringent safety guidelines required by the State, all contractors will need to submit to the Inspectional Services Department or Department of Public Works, as appropriate, a COVID-19 Control Plan for Cambridge on permitted projects. This plan will require:
- A cleaning and decontamination checklist; The number of workers expected on the job site; and
- No non-essential personnel may be present at the worksite.
- Additionally, contractors will be encouraged, and in some cases required, to conduct a site-specific risk analysis and enhanced COVID-19 safety plan for more complex projects.
As previously announced on May 18, the City of Cambridge will expand currently allowed construction activity in the City in four phases:
- Phase 1, beginning May 25, will add site safety prep work for projects previously permitted by Inspectional Services (ISD) and Public Works (DPW). Forthcoming amendments to the City’s Temporary Emergency Construction Order issued on March 18 will modify the definition of essential construction to include work associated with COVID-19 restaurant modification needed to allow them to safely reopen;
- Phase 2, beginning on June 1, will add horizontal construction, city building projects, 100% affordable housing developments, larger buildings (over 25,000 square feet) previously permitted by ISD or DPW;
- Phase 3, tentatively beginning on June 15, will add all remaining existing construction previously permitted by ISD and DPW; and
- Phase 4, tentatively beginning on June 29, will add new permits. Permits can be submitted, and pre-reviews will occur at any time, but permits will not be formally accepted or issued until this date.

A small crew will be working at the intersection installing electrical ducts. There will be minimal impacts to traffic and parking in the area.

The City’s contractor, Newport Construction, will begin installing the raised crosswalk at Huron Ave. and RC Kelley St. this week. This work will require the closure of the intersection of Huron Ave. and RC Kelley St. while the work is taking place. Traffic wanting to enter RC Kelley must go down Garden St., turn onto Donnell St. and enter RC Kelley the wrong direction. This work is expected to take two days, beginning Wednesday, 9/11.

As part of the ongoing street and sidewalk reconstruction work on Huron Ave., the City’s contractor, Newport Construction, will continue sidewalk work from Garden St. to Raymond St. beginning next week. Crews will begin on the even side, removing and resetting curbing, and then installing new sidewalks. Once the even side is complete, they will move to the odd side.
Concrete sidewalks and brick sidewalks will be completed at different times. The regular crew will be setting the foundation for brick sidewalks, but a specialty crew will come in to lay the bricks. Sidewalks will remain passable while the work is being completed, but please exercise caution when walking in the work zone.
This work is expected to take approximately 4-6 weeks to complete, weather permitting.

As part of the ongoing street and sidewalk reconstruction work on Huron Ave., the City's contractor, Newport Construction, will mobilize on Tuesday, August 20th to begin curb and sidewalk work. Crews will begin on the even side of Huron Ave. between Concord and Garden. They will then move to the odd side of that same section. Finally they will move to the Garden to Raymond section of Huron Ave.
This work is expected to take several weeks, weather permitting. Please check the schedule tab for updated work schedule.
Final roadway paving and back-of-sidewalk restoration will occur at the end of the project and will be announced via an additional notice.
On Friday, August 9th, weather permitting, crews will be applying an initial 4” layer of binder pavement to the roadway on Huron Ave. between Concord Ave. and Raymond St. and on Cutler Ave. This work requires parking restrictions along this stretch. Signs will be posted 48 hours in advance and cars that remain in the work zone will be towed. Vehicle access in and out of properties will be restricted during work hours while crews perform the paving. Please plan vehicle trips accordingly.
There will be a grade difference between the regular road and the section under construction. Crews will also be raising casting structures in the street. We kindly ask that motorists and cyclists drive through the construction zone slowly. The roadway will also be lower, making the curbs higher for parked cars. Please use caution when opening car doors so as not to damage them on the curbs.
There will be a brief hiatus in work after this paving operation. Crews will return to begin curb and sidewalk work followed by final roadway paving. This work will be announced via an additional notice in the coming weeks.
What to Expect During Construction:

Notice: Huron Ave Reconstruction Project- Roadway Work Beginning week of Monday, July 8th.
The Huron Ave Reconstruction Project is continuing to progress and we wanted to alert you of a change in construction phases beginning on Monday, July 8th. This work will take place in two phases:
Concord Ave. to Garden St.: Now that the drainage work is complete, crews will move on to roadway reconstruction. To ensure that the roadway conditions will be favorable for many years to come, crews will engage in full-depth reconstruction. At the end of each day, the contractor will clean the work site to allow for motorists to utilize the roadway. There will be a grade difference between the regular road and the section under construction. We kindly ask that motorists drive through the construction zone slowly. The roadway will also be lower, making the curbs higher for parked cars. Please use caution when opening car doors so as not to damage them on the curbs. This work is expected to take 2 weeks.
Garden St. to Raymond St.: Crews will begin working to replace the water services on this section of Huron Ave. Please exercise caution when biking, walking and driving in the area. This work is expected to take one month. After the water work is complete, crews will move to this section for full-depth reconstruction.

Crews will continue working to replace the water main between Garden St. and Raymond St.
May 6, 2019
In association with The Department of Public Works (DPW) roadway and sidewalk reconstruction project, the Cambridge Water Department (CWD) will be replacing the old 6” water main on Huron Ave., from Garden St. to Raymond St.. This work is scheduled to begin the week of May 28th. During this process the Water Department will be upgrading the existing 100+ year old 6” cast iron water main with a new 8” Ductile Iron water main which will include all valves hydrants and water services. This work is expected to take approximately 2 months to complete.
IMPROVING YOUR WATER SYSTEM:
As part of our ongoing maintenance program, we must periodically recondition and replace sections of our water system to maintain the highest quality water at an adequate pressure. Some of the benefits of this work are improved water quality, better flows, increased fire protection and better control of our system.
HOW WILL THIS WORK AFFECT YOU?
WATER SERVICE - The water main or your water service may need to be taken out of service to improve the system. During this project we will make every effort to minimize water service interruptions. While the work is in progress, residents and businesses along the route may have a need to be provided with a “temporary” supply of water during these interruptions. We will notify you at least 72 hours in advance of any water interruptions and make every effort to minimize impacts to your water service.
PARKING - Some restricted parking will occur during construction and every effort to minimize this inconvenience will be made. Daily work zones will be posted for no parking and every effort will be made to avoid any vehicle towing.
PLEASE….WATCH YOUR STEP!
If you live, travel, work or shop in the project area, you'll notice a number of openings in the street to allow access to the water main running across the intersections. All openings will be covered at the end of each workday and will be resurfaced as soon as possible after the project is finished. You can help by cautioning your family and friends to watch their step and to avoid the work areas as much as possible.
LEAD LINED WATER SERVICES:
The water department will be removing all lead-lined water services within this project area and replacing them with copper tubing. If our records indicate that you have a lead lined service, you will receive additional correspondence explaining the process and what steps you need to take at a later time. The lead-lined water services will be replaced from the water main to the property line (rear of sidewalk) at no charge to the customer. With regard to your water service from the property line to the water meter (property side), you may elect to retain the services of a contractor of your choice or you can select any of the pre-approved contractor’s from a list that will be provided with the upcoming lead service notification letter. The cost for replacing the water service from the property line to the water meter will be the responsibility of the property owner. It is in your best financial interest to have the property side water service work done in coordination with the work of the Water Department. We will notify you in advance if you currently have a lead service line to your property.

Update: Newport Construction, will begin mobilizing on Huron Ave next week ahead of the start of drainage work.
Newport has installed tree protection along the street and will be performing survey and layout work, saw-cutting areas of the roadway, and delivering drainage structures to the site this week.
On or about Monday, 4/1, Newport will begin the installation of several catch basins along the curb line to improve drainage along Huron Ave. This will begin at Concord Ave and work its way toward Raymond Street, weather permitting. Following the drainage work, crews will be working on replacing the water main with an anticipated start at the end of April. A separate notice will be delivered by the Water Department ahead of water main replacement.
What to Expect During Construction:
- Work hours will be 7 AM to 4 PM, Monday-Friday.
- “No Parking” signs will be posted; please be sure to check dates/times.

Update: Newport will complete installing tree protection along the street over the next week.
Phase 1 of drainage improvements will begin on or around April 1, 2019, along Huron Ave between Concord Ave and Garden Street. Newport Construction will continue this utility work over seven weeks.
Notice: Chapter 90 Contract 23A Reconstruction Project - Riedesel Ave, Brewster St, Highland St and Huron Ave (Concord Ave to Raymond St.) Work beginning over the next month.
As part of the Chapter 90 Contract 23A Reconstruction Project, the City’s contractor, Newport Construction, will begin mobilizing in the coming days.
Newport will begin installing tree protection along the street, performing survey and layout work, saw-cutting areas of the roadway and delivering drainage structures. DigSafe markings will also begin appearing on the sidewalk and roadways.
Over the next month, weather permitting, Newport will begin the installation of the water main along Huron Ave between Garden and Raymond Streets. Resident of Huron Ave. will receive a notice with specific details regarding this work. Additionally, notices will be delivered to each individual street detailing work specific to that street as the project progresses.
This project is part of the City’s 5-Year Plan for Street and Sidewalks and will include paving, sidewalk improvements and utility installations.
What to Expect During Construction:

Tuesday, September 25th
Huron Ave, between Concord Ave. and Raymond St., is scheduled for upcoming street and sidewalk reconstruction as part of the City’s 5 Year Plan. The Department of Public Works and the City’s Community Development Department will be hosting a third community meeting on Tuesday, September 25th from 6PM-7:30PM at the Tobin School Auditorium, 197 Vassal Lane to discuss the Huron Ave. Reconstruction Project.
At the two previous meetings on April 23rd and June 14th we discussed:
- Traffic calming measures
- Congestion at the intersection of Huron Ave. and Garden St.
- Pedestrian safety concerns at the intersection of Huron Ave. and Raymond St.
- Bike safety concerns at congested intersections
- Evaluation of existing trees and potential locations for new trees
As a result of these discussions, we have:
- Met with the fire department to review design options
- Conducted a parking study to evaluate the demand for on-street parking and assess the loading zone requirements to support local businesses
- Met with the Bicycle, Pedestrian and Transit Committees
- Met with the City Arborist to strategize ways to increase street trees
The goal of this third meeting will be to discuss the information we’ve received and present our recommendations for improving this section of Huron Ave. for all of the various users of the street.

NOTICE: Boring and Pavement Core Samples on Your Street - 5/2
As part of the design process for roadway reconstruction of your street, the City's consultant, through Carr-Dee Corporation, will begin subsurface investigations. The purposes of these investigations is to obtain existing pavement, soil and groundwater conditions. The results will assist in determining the type of roadway reconstruction that will take place on your street.
Boring locations have been selected in areas that will give the best representation of roadway conditions while minimizing traffic and parking disruptions. However, "No Parking" areas will still be designated and a detail officer has been requested to be on-sight to help direct vehicle and pedestrian traffic. "No Parking" signs will be posted 48 hours in advance.
