The Broadway Improvements Project has been awarded to DeFelice Corporation, and they will  begin work in March 2013. In preparation for that, the Cambridge Electrical Department has been working on installing new roadway lighting on Broadway.

For more information on this project, please view the Project Background tab.

The project is substantially complete.  Remaining items include irrigation work and landscaping, which will take place in spring 2014.

The City developed plans to reconstruct the roadway and sidewalk on Broadway between Third Street and Ames Street.  This is a surface enhancement project with the intention of increasing aesthetic appeal and pedestrian and bicycle safety.

The Proposed Work Includes:

  • Roadway and sidewalk reconstruction between Third and Ames Streets
  • Improved pedestrian safety at the Volpe-to-Marriott crosswalk by re-alignment of the crosswalk and elimination the double jeopardy situation (pedestrians currently step into a traffic lane in front of or between a stopped vehicle and then into an adjacent traffic lane with limited visibility)
  • Improvement of the hotel edge and taxi zone to reduce vehicle conflicts and enhance pedestrian and bicycle access
  • Increasing the quantity and quality of green space
  • Maintaining Broadway's current vehicle capacity
