Forestry Programs

We are proud of our national recognition as a Tree City USA and consider the ongoing process of tree care management an integral part of city life in Cambridge. The trees we plant and care for today will beautify our neighborhoods, businesses, and parks, increase property values, and conserve energy in the city for years to come.

We would appreciate your help
with watering newly planted trees.  Gator bags have been installed throughout the city on newly planted trees.  If you have one around a tree in front of your house, we ask that you fill the bag once or twice a week.

See instructions below.GATOR BAG2
A gator bag is a heavy plastic watering bag that goes directly around the trunk of the tree.  This system provides a steady source of water directly to the roots of the trees minimizing run-off, evaporation and waste of water.  This really makes a difference for a young tree surviving a summer and helping the tree roots to get established.

Join Tree Keepers, a program to help young trees become hearty, healthy, mature trees.  Also, the Committee on Public Planting meets to promote and improve the quality and diversity of public planting throughout Cambridge and our new Junior Forester Program is a volunteer opportunity open to local youth between the ages of 5 and 13 years.

Additional volunteer opportunities are available through the Water Department at the Fresh Pond Reservation
