Get a Library Card
A library card is quick and easy to get and gives you access to over 6 million books, CDs, DVDs, magazines, and online resources. You may obtain a library card by presenting a photo id with your current local address, OR a photo id plus one printed document with your name and current local address. There is no waiting period for a library card and it is free. Please fill out this form and bring it to one of the Cambridge Public Libraries with your ID and proof of address.
Your Cambridge Public Library card:
- gives you access to the Minuteman Library Network
- allows you to reserve and renew items in person, by phone, or online
- lets you borrow most books, audio books, CDs, DVDs, and magazines
- gives you access to public computers at any Cambridge Public Library location
- gets you passes for free or reduced admission to many area museums
Your use of the Cambridge Public Library is private and confidential, as stated in Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 78, Section 7. We do not share information about library patrons with any outside organization or government agency.
Online Registration for Temporary Library Cards
Minuteman Network has introduced a temporary e-library card that anyone without a Minuteman Library card can register for online, to give you immediate access to our Overdrive titles and Minuteman databases. You may also place holds on material through the Minuteman catalog.
Why it’s beneficial:
If you want to access to an Overdrive title or a Minuteman databases in a hurry (or while we are closed), this will provide immediate access those collections and it allows holds to be placed on the rest of the collection. If you are visiting Cambridge for less than two months and do not qualify for a regular library card, this would give you access to e-content.
Important details to note:
This Minutemen card will expire after 30 days, if you do not visit a library to get your physical library card. It is not a way to fully register for a library card. When you come into the library to check out material or pick up any holds that you placed, you will still need to fill out an application, show a photo ID and proof of address.
Put your Library Card on your Phone
Never lose your library card again! Lighten your wallet...in a good way. Back up your library card on your smartphone with the following apps:
For iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and Windows smartphones, you could use Key Ring and CardStar.
CardStar creates a very attractive library card. Your card will even have the Cambridge Public Library logo on it, and the online account button takes you right to your Minuteman Library Account login. The home page is our mobile site. Simple, direct and easy to use.
Key Ring allows you to take pictures of the front and back of your card, and, like CardStar, generates a barcode readable by the scanners here at Main and at all the branches. Choose the category “Library”: it is in there! Key Ring is multifunctional; it lets you make lists (with photos!) and keep track of loyalty programs and sales in your area, but it doesn’t give you the access to library information, like the mobile site and your Minuteman account as simply as CardStar does.
If you are on a Windows phone, you might like Loyalty Cards, using barcode style Code 39.
