THE MISSION
Provide a set of recommendations to the City Manager for a outstanding, visionary library system that includes the roles, services and physical requirements to expand the opportunities for all the people of Cambridge and enhance the quality of life in the City for the 21st Century.
The Committee's strategies will include significant public education and outreach that will engage a significant cross section of the Cambridge community to solicit their input. The Committee will encourage advice and assistance from a wide variety of experts.

I. I. SYSTEM PROGRAM PLANNING
A. What is needed for an outstanding, visionary 21st Century Library system for the City of Cambridge.(?)
1. Cambridge Library System mandate as of 1996 - mission statement, roles & services
2. Educate public about traditional library services and roles and the non-traditional, innovative roles that are being developed globally for libraries of the 21st century; encourage a new ways of thinking@ about library systems that would benefit the City=s unique characteristics.
a. Library Consultants (Cohen) input; American Library Association, Simmons School of Library Science, MIT Media Lab, Library 2000 at MIT
b. Other specialist input, i.e., technology, sociology ,futurist, other libraries, space planner, etc, expertise
3. 3. Establish a far-reaching out-reach program to assess needs from:
a. Residents, interest groups, non-profit organizations, seniors, high school students (both from public and private schools) etc., including underserved populations that may not necessarily be organized-- Note: this list needs to be expansive!!
