This busy neighborhood library extends out to a beautiful reading garden with sculptured benches by Cambridge artist Judy McKie.
The artist's idea of making the garden as natural as possible, with soft organic forms and an "urban wild" planting scheme, will offer a respite from the heavy traffic along Cambridge Street. In line with her well-known functional animal sculptures, McKie has created bronze benches for the space.
Three friendly "Alley Cats" will greet visitors to the garden with an offer to sit down for a while and read a book or chat with a neighbor. The landscape design also offers a space for small communtiy gatherings and library events.
The Valente Branch Library is located in an area between Lechmere and Inman Square, which receives many of Cambridge's new immigrants. The branch plays host to a community that includes large populations from the Caribbean and the Portuguese speaking countries of Cape Verde, Portugal and Brazil. Check out the calendar of events for monthly programming information.
In addition to our vast assortment of English Language materials, the library is the proud home of the Manuel Rogers, Sr. Center for Portuguese Culture (The Rogers Collection). It is a collection of Portuguese language books, DVDs, and CDs that serves the needs of our Portuguese speaking community.
