The License Commission, comprised of a chairperson, the Fire Chief, and the Police Commissioner, is charged with the responsibility of issuing licenses and enforcing rules, regulations, local ordinances, and state laws pertaining to the sale of alcoholic beverages to common victualers, innholders, lodging houses and dorms, garage and gasoline storage permits, shops and sales, hackney carriages and drivers, open air parking lots, entertainment, fortune tellers, raffles and bazaars, festivals, used car dealers, peddlers, auctioneers, jitneys and livery/limousine licenses in the City of Cambridge.
It is strongly suggested that, whenever possible, the applicant visit the License Commission Office during regular business hours for application forms and procedures necessary for the business that the applicant wishes to start in Cambridge. There is always a staff member available to assist with the application process. When a visit is not possible, the License Commission staff will send application forms and procedures to the applicant by mail.
The License Commission usually meets on the second and fourth Tuesday evening of the month. Call our office at 617-349-6140 for exact schedule and filing deadlines.
As you may be aware, the Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission (“ABCC”) which is the State Agency that also oversees/approves your liquor licenses, has gone paperless. The Board of License Commissioners for the City of Cambridge is proud to announce that we have been selected to be part of the first group of municipalities to roll out this new e-licensing program.
Please be advised that within the next few weeks, any approved liquor license holders will be receiving emails from the ABCC explaining the program. Please note that as of August 2016, all transactions involving your liquor licenses/applications which have to be approved by the ABCC will have to be done online, including the renewal of your licenses in November. Any applications scheduled for August 9, 2016, must be submitted online. In an attempt to assist with this, we have begun to install three computer terminals in our lobby which will have access to the e-licensing system. However, the e-licensing system can be accessed from any computer and terminal which can connect to the internet.
Finally, the e-licensing system requires that any license holder or applicant have a valid email address to which all communications regarding the liquor license and applications will be sent. We implore you to communicate with us at License@cambridgema.gov and confirm the appropriate email address which will be used by you for this purpose.
