Fuel Assistance Program

Human Service Programs

Serving both the cities of Cambridge and Somerville, the Fuel Assistance Program assists low-income households with winter heating costs incurred between November 1 and April 30. Eligibility for the program is determined by gross household income that falls within the Federal Poverty guidelines.

The Fuel Assistance Program notifies and pays heating vendors directly for program participants that pay out of pocket for their heating costs. Program participants whose heat is included in their rent could be eligible to receive a payment, made directly to them, for the “heat” portion of their rent.

Our office staff gives top priority to “no heat emergencies” or threatened utility shutoffs for individuals with an eligible application on file.

Tips and FAQs

How do I apply for Fuel Assistance?

Most applicants who were eligible for benefits last year should receive an application in the mail by the beginning of October. New applications will be taken starting in mid-October. Please call (617)-349-6252 after October 1 to make an appointment.

Income documentation for your household will be required, along with proof of address and verification of how you heat (additional documentation may be required).

English and Spanish speaking intake workers available. Special arrangements can be made to take your application if you're homebound and unable to come to the office.

If you are in a no heat situation or facing immediate utility shutoff,  then you will be seen the same day you call; however, no funds can be committed until November 1.

If you're not eligible for Fuel Assistance and heat with oil, we may be able to arrange a Citizens Energy (Joe Kennedy) oil delivery.

Are there other types of fuel assistance programs?

The Fuel Assistance Application can be a one-stop application for other programs, services, and referrals.

Discount Programs

You may be eligible for discounts on your gas and electric bills. The discounts range from 10-25% on the distribution charges. Some utilities require that the name on the bill is the same as the Head of Household on your fuel assistance application.

Weatherization Services

Can install attic and/or wall insulation and perform air sealing measures to prevent heat loss from your home. View our flyer to learn more.

The Heartwap Program

Provides heating system repair and replacement services to low-income households. Households that are eligible for LIHEAP with a gross annual income that does not exceed 60% of the estimated state median income are eligible for HEARTWAP services.

Citizens Energy (Joe Kennedy Oil)

If you're not eligible for Fuel Assistance and in financial hardship, or you've exhausted your benefits, we may be able to arrange an oil delivery for 100 gallons free. Check back for a start date for this program.
